Name: Nannie R. Potts
Profession: I am a retired teacher, community activist and was Mayor of Cornelius from 1982 to 1983.
Background: I was born and raised in Davidson, N.C. and taught high school at South Iredell and Torrence Lytle for 33 years.
Contribution to Cornelius/surrounding area: I work with and help the youth of the Smithville community and surrounding area by helping to establish a tutoring program and a summer recreation camp. With the help of the Cornelius-Lemley Volunteer Fire Department, I help to make sure seniors have the proper equipment in their homes by getting carbon monoxide monitors and smoke detectors installed wherever needed.
If you could have dinner with one person from history (present or past), who would it be and why? I would have dinner with (local businessman) Robert Cashion, because he has devoted his entire life to the Town of Cornelius. He even went so far as to donate 1% of the money spent on grocery receipts to the community and local schools.
If someone gave you $100, 000 to improve the community, what would you do with the money? I would help build a recreation center for all of the youth in the community to provide some type of supervison for those who can't afford other organizations. I would also set aside money for kids in need of scholarship money for college and other needs that may occur.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our world today? I think the economy is the biggest challenge facing our world today, because it cuts back on the abililty of individuals to get the medical attention they need.
Who was the biggest influence on you? My father was my biggest influence, because he believed in the church and believed in helping others better their education in order to live and function in the world.
What organization(s) do you currently belong to? I belong to the North Mecklenburg Civitan Club and church-related organizations.
