McDowell Creek Greenway Construction Update
The sights and sounds of greenway construction have been continuing along McDowell Creek at Westmoreland Avenue. All grading has been completed and the stone base has been installed forming the base for the final asphalt surface that will be laid this Spring. The Greenway is scheduled to be open early this summer.
The ten foot wide 1.5 mile trail will allow bikers and hikers to leisurely traverse their way in a peaceful wooded setting from Westmoreland Avenue to the future Robbins Park, surrounding residential neighborhoods, and Birkdale Village. The Town of Cornelius and Mecklenburg County applied for and received a $169,000 grant from the N.C. Department of Transportation to start construction on the first portion of the greenway, which begins at Westmoreland Road and extend 1/3 of a mile south along McDowell Creek. Mecklenburg County is providing construction administration on the project and is also constructing the remaining 1.2 miles of greenway with its own funds extending the greenway to Sam Furr Road (U.S. 73) in Huntersville.
