Name: Fountain L. Walker
Profession: I am Chief of the Davidson College Campus Police Department.
Background: I am a native of Miami, Florida and served 8 years in the US Marine Corps at Camp Lejeune. After my second tour of duty, I opted for a career in law enforcement. After completing my basic law enforcement training at CPCC in 1995, I obtained a position with the Cornelius Police Department (CPD). My first assignment with CPD was Community Specialist Officer, where I co-founded the Community Action Response Team (C.A.R.T.) and implemented a community policing philosophy, which requires officers to effectively assess, develop and put into action plans to resolve specific community concerns with citizen input. After spending several years at CPD, I became the first African-American Police Chief at Davidson College. I am a devoted father to four children: Brenton, Christian, Reagan and Mitchell.
Contribution to Cornelius/surrounding area: I have been involved with several organizations, both past and present: Chairman of the Lake Norman Community Development Council, Lake Norman YMCA Community Outreach Campaign, Pro-Active Crime Control Team, Davidson College Campus Safety Committee. Vice President of Mecklenburg Republican Men, Secretary of Davidson Masonic Lodge #511.
Member of the Life Skills Advisory Committee, Lake Norman Community Development Committee, North Mecklenburg Crime Stoppers Committee, Charlotte-Mecklenburg All-Hazards Advisory Committee, and Ethnic Diversity Committee.
Member of the Board of Directors for Lake Norman YMCA, Ada Jenkins Center, Davidson Secondary School, Acclaim Academy, Lake Norman Business Development and United Way of Lake Norman.
Charlotte-Metro YMCA Community Development Advisory Board, Central Piedmont Community College- North, Criminal Justice Advisory Board, North Parks Advisory Board
I coach soccer and basketball at the YMCA and often volunteer at Habitat for Humanity.
If you could have dinner with one person from history (past or present), who would it be and why? I would have dinner with Colin Powell. He exemplifies true dedication to those he is sworn to serve. I see him as a true and just leader that understands his role and does not shirk from responsibility.
If someone gave you $100, 000 to improve the community, what would you do with the money? I would use it to buy new equipment for the playground at the Cornelius Village Apartments.
If you wrote a book or screenplay about your life, what would the title be and who would star in it? The title would be "Co-Co-Po-Po" and Michael Clarke Duncan would be the star. This piece would be a dramatic comedy with emphasis on the intricate balance of policing an affluent community as a minority.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our world today? The devaluation of civic pride is the biggest challenge facing our world today.
Who was the biggest influence on you? My mother and my grandfather really influenced my life. My mother shaped my internal self and my grandfather, her father, shaped the man.
